ARI Chairman Bill Bratton Speaks at International Summit in Colombia
NEW YORK, N.Y., April 15, 2010 –
Altegrity Risk International (ARI) Chairman William J. Bratton, who established his reputation in the law enforcement and criminal justice communities as one of America’s premier police chiefs, was invited to speak at the international summit for the prevention of violence in Latin America and the Caribbean in Bogota, Colombia. The two-day conference is April 15-16; Mr. Bratton is speaking on April 16.
The summit is an opportunity for international security and law enforcement experts, governors, and government leaders from Africa, Europe, North America, and South America (Southern Cone), who share their knowledge in the field, to exchange information and best practices as well as discuss new technologies for controlling and preventing crime at local levels, particularly youth violence, organized crime, and public security.
Mr. Bratton—the former Commissioner of the New York Police Department and former Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department—will share his experiences reducing crime in those cities. When he took over as police commissioner of New York City in 1994, there were more than 2,000 murders a year; today, there are less than 500 a year. In L.A., where gangs once ruled entire neighborhoods, Chief Bratton reduced crime by nearly 60 percent during his tenure.
Mr. Bratton’s overarching message to the summit is one of hope: that change is possible. Not only can police departments dramatically improve their performance against crime, but they can do it in a way that respects the rights of the citizens they protect and wins wide public approval for their actions. “If there is a central credo of my career, it is this," Bratton explained. “You don’t have to abuse the public to protect the public; you don’t have to violate the law to enforce the law; and the police agency that works well with the communities it serves is going to be more effective—not less effective—against crime.” He continued, “It is not the hard hand that we need but the wise head, the ability to manage and focus our police institutions so that they work up to their full potential, serving the public and fighting the criminals.”
