ARI Chairman William Bratton Co-Authors “8 Steps to Reduce Crime” Article
NEW YORK, NY, May 5, 2010 –
Altegrity Risk International (ARI) Chairman William Bratton, who established his reputation in the law enforcement and criminal justice communities as one of America’s premier police chiefs, recently co-authored the article “8 Steps to Reduce Crime” for the
Americas Quarterly Spring 2010 issue.
Mr. Bratton discusses how crime in U.S. cities once seemed on the verge of spiraling out of control, but bringing police structures and operations more in touch with communities has helped reverse this trend. New York City, for instance, is recording crime rates in recent years comparable to the rates of the 1960s. Murders are down from 2,245 in 1990 to 471 in 2009, and the city has just completed its 19th year of consecutive declines in the major crime categories.
Mr. Bratton suggests that there are important lessons for Latin America in the recent U.S. experience and that the same reform can work in Latin America, even though the region faces substantially more challenging crime problems than the U.S. faced even at its crime peak. Reforms in police departments, in police strategies, and in criminal justice practice can have a substantial impact on crime in Latin America, just as they did in the United States.
